Final Four Recap
Magnolia continued to roll with a convincing 74% to 26% win over Thousand Oaks Cafe. Magnolia is coming in strong to the championship round, never having trailed in any match and handily destroying their opponents! Las Canarias handled business with The Original Donut Shop, taking 65% to 35% of the votes! After having a come from behind victory over The Monterey, the question is whether they can put up a fight against Magnolia Pancake Haus in the final game of the bracket! That’s right, it is Magnolia Pancake Haus versus Las Caniaras for the Best Breakfast in SA! Voting closes at midnight this Thursday!
Round 2 Recap
In the Mexican Breakfast division, it turns out that the chilaquiles of Thousand Oaks were too strong for the barbacoa and Big Red from Taqueria Datapoint! Thousand Oaks advances to the Final Four at a 60% to 40% margin. They will be matched up against the Magnolia Pancake Haus, who emerged as a victor in the Americana region over the Guenther House 68% to 32%. Magnolia has had the largest margin of victory in both rounds, proving to be a San Antonio Breakfast juggernaut!
Las Canarias came from behind to top The Monterey, 57% to 43%, to become the Brunch region champion. The Original Donut Shop, which is also know for their tacos, beat Las Palapas in the Breakfast Taco Region at a score of 63% to 37%. But how will the breakfast taco winner fare against a fancy all-you-can-eat brunch? Get your vote on now to see who advances to the championship round!
Round 1 Recap!
On the left hand side of the bracket, Thousand Oaks beat Los Jalapeños, Taqueria Datapoint took care of Tellez Tamales (I would have thought tamale lovers would have represented more!) and Guenther House upset Il Sogno Osteria, with a 2:1 ratio of votes cast for the winner. In the only blowout of the bracket, Magnolia Pancake Haus coasted by Flagstop Cafe, taking 90% of the user votes.

Las Canarias had a commanding performance against upstart Sustenio, while the Original Donut Shop fans turned out to give them a 61% to 39% win over Ruthie’s.

Selection Sunday
To make the bracket interesting, we decided to break it down into four regions that have the following restaurants:
- Mexican—while these restaurants may have breakfast tacos, they excel at sit down meals such as chilaquiles, barbacoa and huevos rancheros. The restaurants in this region include Thousand Oaks Cafe, Los Jalapeños, Taqueria Datapoint and Tellez Tamales & Barbacoa.
- Americana—these are going to be the classic bacon, ham, eggs, pancakes and waffles type of meals. The restaurants in this region include Magnolia Pancakae Haus, Flagstop Cafe, Il Sogno Osteria and the Guenther House.
- Brunch—similar to the Americana region, the meals in the brunch category are defined by having alcohol present at the breakfast. The restaurants in this region include Las Canarias, Sustenio, The Monterey and Max’s Wine Dive.
- Breakfast Tacos—while many places in this category may have a sit down breakfast, the breakfast tacos are particularly noteworthy. The restaurants in this region include The Original Donut Shop, Ruthie’s, Pete’s Tako House and Las Palapas.
As with any bracket, there are always some folks that get snubbed. Be sure to let us know who we missed in the comments at the bottom of the post. Watch the video below for the Selection Show where we unveiled thesixteen restaurants that serve some of the finest breakfast in town.
Voting started at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, March 6th with each round lasting two full days.
