Congrats to David Durbin on winning the top individual medal in the 2017 SA Flavor Medal Contest—we don’t even need to vote on this one! Let’s just call this the “Durbin Prize,” but we will still have voting for the people’s choice starting on 4/30!
Before we get to the individual Fiesta Medal voting, I just wanted to say that the top spot is automatic. It’s going to the Maestro of Medals, Mr. David Durbin. You may recall that David won the individual medal voting from last year for his luchador Fiesta Medal of 2016. And when I saw this medal’s unveiling on the Fiesta Medal Maniacs Facebook page, I knew that it would be automatic if I was able to get one in the contest (which I was—thanks David!).
This medal will be a trendsetter. We already talked about how 2017 saw a lot of innovation, but this hummingbird medal introduced two new things: the overlay and the ribbons. The VIVA papel picado overlay was amazing, but if that’s all you focus on you’ll miss out on the intricacies of the Durbin styled hummingbird. I almost feel like it is similar to filigree, the fine silver craftsmanship that’s extremely popular in Cordoba, Spain. David said he was inspired by the hummingbirds that would hover around his plumerias in his backyard looking for nectar. And the bright colored ribbons are fantastic, something that definitely sets the medal off on a sash.
The two questions I have are: (1) how’s David going to top this mic drop moment for 2018? and (2) how many people will have ribbons in their medals next year. Well done David and VIVA!
