While food trucks are all the rage right now, dishes made with truffle oil, duck fat and exotic grilled cheese seem to dominate this scene. Yes, I enjoy this decadence as much as the next person, but more often than not I prefer to eat at a food truck that focuses first on preparing solid food rather than attempting to be simply outrageous. A food truck that gets this right every time is the Rickshaw Stop, where owners Sameer and Meagan Siddiqui specialize in traditional Pakistani food.
The Rickshaw Stop primarily prepares kebabs and samosas with flavors that you might not have had unless, according to their website, “you are friends with a Pakistani family or [if] you’ve spent extensive time in Pakistan.” This is the type of food from a mobile kitchen that I enjoy getting down with – real, authentic and cooked from the heart.
The food at the Rickshaw Stop has no airs about it – it is just dang good. I am a creature of habit and go with my favorite, the beef bihari kebab. The meat is incredibly tender and is served in a paratha (a flaky kind of bread similar to a tortilla) in the same way that you would expect to see a taco served. But don’t let that fool you, the taste and seasoning is unique and nothing like that of a fajita.
You can get the combination plate where you get the option of two samosas or a dessert. While I love the baklava, I usually resist and order the veggie samosas, a testament to how good they are given my huge sweet tooth. The samosas have a nice crispy outer shell and I enjoy dipping them in the green sauce that comes with the kebab.
Be sure to stop by the Boardwalk on Bulverde for a kebab while Eat St films the Rickshaw Stop on July 22 from 12:00 until 2:00PM. Otherwise, you can typically find the Rickshaw Stop over at the Boardwalk on Bulverde on the weekend, which is a great venue to take your friends or family to enjoy some good food under the Texas sky.
